How to Program a Universal Remote to a Sceptre TV (With Code)

Follow these steps exactly. The TV must be on before you start.

  1. Turn on your Sceptre TV using the power button on the TV itself — not the remote.
  2. On the universal remote, press the TV button (or Device button, depending on the model).
  3. Press and hold the Setup button until the LED indicator blinks twice. On some remotes, the light stays solid.
  4. Enter the code for your Sceptre TV. Use the codes listed above for your specific remote brand.
  5. Press the Power button on the universal remote.
  6. If the TV turns off, the code worked. Press Power again to turn it back on.
  7. Test volume, mute, and channel buttons to confirm all functions work.

If the TV doesn’t turn off in step 5, that code didn’t work. Repeat from step 3 with the next code on the list.

Not sure what each button on your remote actually does? Use the remote control button explainer tool for a quick breakdown.

How to Program a Sceptre TV Remote Without a Code (Auto-Search Method)

Use this method when none of the listed codes work, or when you have a remote brand not listed here.

  1. Turn on your Sceptre TV using the TV’s power button.
  2. Press the TV or Device button on the universal remote.
  3. Press and hold Setup until the LED blinks twice.
  4. Press the Channel Up button slowly, one press at a time. Each press sends a different code signal.
  5. Keep pressing Channel Up until the TV shuts off.
  6. Press OK or Enter immediately to lock in that code.
  7. Turn the TV back on using the remote and test all buttons.

This process can take anywhere from 10 to 90 seconds depending on how many codes your remote cycles through before finding the match.

Troubleshooting — What to Do When Codes Don’t Work

Volume Works but Channel Buttons Don’t

This is a common issue when using cable or satellite remotes (Xfinity, Spectrum, DISH). The remote is partially programmed to the TV for audio, but the channel functions are routed to the cable box, not the TV. This is normal behavior — it’s by design. You control channels through the cable box and volume through the TV. If that’s not what you want, try a different code from the list above or use the auto-search method.

Remote Turns the TV On but Nothing Else Responds

The code matched only the power function. This usually happens with codes marked as alternate codes (asterisk in code tables). Try the next code on the list. Code 10000 (5-digit) is a known partial-function code for Sceptre — it only controls power, volume up/down, and mute.

No Code Works at All

Try these in order:

  1. Replace the batteries in the remote — low batteries cause inconsistent code entry.
  2. Confirm you’re pressing the correct device button before entering the code (TV, not AUX or DVD).
  3. Try the auto-search method described above.
  4. Check your Sceptre TV’s model number. It’s printed on the label on the back of the TV. Use the TV model number decoder to identify your exact model and confirm compatibility.
  5. If you’ve exhausted all options, the remote may not support Sceptre’s IR protocol. A replacement remote is the most reliable fix at that point.

When to Get a Replacement Remote

If you’ve tried 10 or more codes and the auto-search method failed, a universal remote may not be the right solution for your specific Sceptre TV model. In that case, a dedicated Sceptre replacement remote or a programmable smart remote like the Sofabaton U1 is a more reliable fix. A quality universal TV remote typically costs between $8 and $25 and works out of the box without code programming.
