How to Activate Windows | Match The License To The PC

Windows activates with a digital license or a valid 25-character product key that matches the installed edition.

A valid Windows license can sit on a PC for years and still fail after the wrong edition is installed or a motherboard is replaced. The steps below show how to activate Windows with the license already tied to the PC, a 25-character product key, or a purchase through the Microsoft Store app. The same process also reveals the error blocking activation.

Check The Activation Status First

Windows displays the license state, installed edition, and any activation error on one settings page. Check that page before entering a code or buying another license, since the PC may already have a digital license.

  • Windows 11: Open Start > Settings > System > Activation.
  • Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.

Read the line beside Activation status in Windows 11 or Activation in Windows 10. A message saying Windows is activated means no further action is needed; a digital-license message also tells you whether that license is linked to a Microsoft account.

Activating Windows With The License You Already Own

Windows uses one of two license methods: a digital license associated with the PC hardware, or a 25-character product key. The installed edition must match the license, so a Windows 11 Home license cannot activate Windows 11 Pro.

Use A Digital License

A digital license normally activates Windows as soon as the PC reaches Microsoft’s activation servers and the correct edition is installed. The same hardware and edition are the deciding factors; signing in with the linked Microsoft account helps after a reinstall or hardware change.

  1. Connect the PC to the internet.
  2. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the digital license.
  3. Open the Activation page and wait for Windows to check the license.

The process worked when the page shows Windows is activated with a digital license or Windows is activated with a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.

Enter A 25-Character Product Key

A retail, boxed, refurbished, or organization-issued copy may require a product key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX. Use only the code supplied with that PC, purchase, or licensing program.

  1. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation in Windows 11.
  2. On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
  3. Select Change product key, enter the 25-character code, and complete the prompts.

The activation page changes to an activated status after Microsoft accepts the code. An edition-mismatch message means the license and installed copy do not match.

Which Windows License Do You Have?

The place Windows came from usually tells you whether activation should be automatic or require a code. Match your situation to the table before changing settings or reinstalling the operating system.

Microsoft’s Windows activation instructions confirm the current settings paths, license types, and edition-matching requirement. The page also explains where each purchase type stores its license.

Link Your Microsoft Account Before Hardware Changes

A Microsoft account link gives the Activation troubleshooter a license record to use after a major hardware replacement. The link helps most when Windows already shows an activated digital license.

  1. Sign in as an administrator, then open Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
  2. Confirm that an email address appears above Administrator; that indicates a Microsoft account rather than a local account.
  3. Return to the Activation page, select Add an account, and sign in when that option appears.

The activation message will state that the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account. A local account can still use Windows, but it cannot supply the same account-based reactivation record.

Reactivate After A Motherboard Or Major Hardware Change

A motherboard replacement can break the hardware match used by a digital license. Windows can often restore activation through the troubleshooter when the license was linked to the same Microsoft account before the change. The Troubleshoot button appears only while Windows is not activated.

  1. Sign in as an administrator.
  2. Open Start > Settings > System > Activation > Troubleshoot.
  3. Select I changed hardware on this device recently, then select Next.
  4. Sign in with the Microsoft account linked to the license.
  5. Select the box beside This is the device I’m using right now, then select Activate.

The PC returns to an activated state when the correct device and license are matched. A retail product key can also be entered through Change product key; an organization-owned or nontransferable license may require help from the seller, manufacturer, or IT team.

Why Won’t Windows Activate?

Windows activation usually fails because the edition is wrong, the code is invalid or already assigned elsewhere, the PC cannot reach Microsoft’s servers, or a hardware change broke the license match. Run the troubleshooter before buying another license, then use the displayed error code to choose the next action.

Error Or MessageWhat It Usually MeansNext Action
0xC004F034The product key is invalid or belongs to another Windows versionEnter a valid code for the installed version and edition
0xC004F210The installed edition does not match the licenseEnter a matching code or reinstall the licensed edition

0x87e10bc6Microsoft’s activation server or licensing service returned an errorRetry later, then run Troubleshoot
0x80070652Update components may be missing or damaged, or the connection is weakRun Windows Update troubleshooting and retry activation

A code that was sold for another PC, blocked by Microsoft, or used beyond its license terms needs replacement from the seller or license owner rather than repeated entry. Repeated entry does not fix a blocked or mismatched license.

Activation From License Check To Confirmation

The shortest successful sequence is to identify the installed edition, use the license already associated with the PC, and troubleshoot only when Windows shows a failure. Follow these moves in sequence so an edition mismatch is caught before money is spent.

  1. Open the Activation page and record the edition, status, and error code.
  2. Connect to the internet and sign in with the Microsoft account that owns the digital license.
  3. Wait for automatic activation if the same edition was previously licensed on the same hardware.
  4. Use Change product key only when you have a valid 25-character code for that edition.
  5. Run Troubleshoot after a hardware change or when a valid digital license is not detected.
  6. Use Go to Store only when the PC has no usable digital license or product key.
  7. Stop when the page shows an activated status and, where available, a digital license linked to your Microsoft account.
