AppleCare extends hardware support, covers accidental damage for a fee, and can add theft-and-loss protection depending on the plan.
A dropped iPhone, damaged Mac, or worn battery can cost much less to deal with when AppleCare is active, but the plan does not make every repair free. Knowing how AppleCare works comes down to three things: the type of problem, the plan attached to the device, and the service fee or deductible tied to that claim.
Most Apple products already include a one-year limited warranty and up to 90 days of complimentary technical support. AppleCare extends hardware coverage, adds 24/7 priority support, covers accidental damage, and can cover theft or loss for an eligible iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch.
What Does AppleCare Cover?
AppleCare covers eligible hardware failures, battery service, accidental damage, and technical support, while theft and loss require a plan that specifically includes that protection. The amount you pay depends on why the device needs service.
- Hardware failure: Covered defects can be repaired or the device can be replaced under the plan without an accidental-damage fee.
- Battery service: Apple covers battery replacement at no extra charge when the battery holds less than 80% of its original capacity.
- Accidental damage: Drops, cracked glass, and liquid damage are covered, but a service fee applies to each repair or replacement.
- Technical support: AppleCare includes 24/7 priority access for hardware and software help.
- Theft or loss: Coverage is available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch through plans that include Theft and Loss.
How AppleCare Coverage Works: Plans, Claims, And Limits
AppleCare is sold in different forms, so the plan name tells you whether one device or several devices are covered and whether theft or loss is included. AppleCare+ covers one product, while AppleCare One groups multiple eligible products under one monthly plan.
AppleCare+ includes unlimited accidental-damage service events while coverage remains active. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss allows up to two theft-or-loss claims every 12 months. AppleCare One includes up to three total theft-or-loss claims every 12 months across covered iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices.
AppleCare One currently costs $19.99 per month for up to three Apple devices in the U.S., with additional eligible devices at $5.99 per month each. Separate AppleCare+ pricing varies by product and model.
Buying AppleCare After You Get A Device
AppleCare+ can generally be added during purchase or within 60 days after buying a new Apple device. AppleCare One can also accept certain already-owned products outside that normal window if they meet Apple’s age, account, and condition requirements.
- On iPhone or iPad, open Settings.
- Tap General, then AppleCare & Warranty.
- Select the device you want to cover.
- Choose an available AppleCare plan and follow the onscreen purchase steps.
On a Mac, open the Apple menu, choose System Settings, select General, then open AppleCare & Warranty. Once enrollment finishes, the plan name and coverage details appear in the AppleCare & Warranty panel.
AppleCare One can cover eligible products already associated with your Apple Account that are up to four years old, or headphones up to one year old, if they are in good condition. Apple may require a diagnostic check or inspection before adding an older device.
How Much Do AppleCare Repairs Cost?
AppleCare reduces many repair bills to fixed service fees, but the fee changes by product and damage type. Apple’s current AppleCare coverage page lists the active U.S. benefits and service charges.
| Covered Event | Current U.S. Fee | Applies To |
|---|---|---|
| Screen or back glass damage | $29 | iPhone |
| Other accidental damage | $99 | iPhone |
| Theft or loss | $149 | iPhone with eligible coverage |
| Screen damage | $29 | Current eligible iPad models |
| Other accidental damage | $99 | Current eligible iPad models |
| Accidental damage | $69; $79 for Ultra or Hermès | Apple Watch |
| Theft or loss | $119 | Apple Watch with eligible coverage |
| Accidental damage | $29 | AirPods and Beats |
| Screen or enclosure damage | $99 for most models | Mac and Apple Display |
The fee is charged per service event, so two separate accidents can mean two separate charges. Battery replacement is different: when the covered battery falls below the 80% capacity threshold, Apple lists no additional battery-service fee.
Accidental Damage Still Has A Service Fee
Accidental-damage coverage is useful because it replaces a large out-of-warranty bill with a defined service fee, not because every accident costs nothing. Apple can repair the covered product or provide a replacement that meets the plan’s service terms.
Service can be arranged through Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and some products support mail-in repair or Express Replacement Service. With Express Replacement, Apple sends the replacement first so you can transfer your data before returning the original device.
Cosmetic-only scratches or dents that do not affect function are not covered as accidental-damage repairs. Normal wear also does not turn into a free repair simply because an AppleCare plan is active.
Theft And Loss Has A Find My Rule
Theft-and-loss protection only works when the covered iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch has an eligible plan and Find My is enabled when the device goes missing. Apple also requires Find My to remain enabled throughout the claim process.
For a missing device, mark it as lost through Find My and keep it attached to your Apple Account while the claim is reviewed. Do not remove the device from the account before approval, because that can block the theft-or-loss claim.
Each approved theft-or-loss claim carries its own deductible. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss allows up to two such claims in a 12-month period, while AppleCare One allows up to three total claims per 12 months across the covered iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices.
AppleCare One For Multiple Devices
AppleCare One is designed for people who want several Apple products under one subscription instead of separate plans. The base $19.99 monthly price covers up to three eligible devices, and each additional device currently adds $5.99 per month.
The plan includes the AppleCare+ benefits for each covered product, plus theft-and-loss protection for covered iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch devices. Every device must be associated with the subscriber’s Apple Account, so a family member’s device on a different Apple Account cannot simply be added.
Older eligible products can make AppleCare One useful even after the usual AppleCare+ purchase window has passed. The device must still meet Apple’s eligibility checks before coverage starts.
Limits That Still Apply
AppleCare has clear boundaries: standard accidental-damage coverage does not replace a device that is simply lost or stolen, and cosmetic wear that does not affect function is excluded. Theft and loss must be part of the active plan before the device disappears.
Plan terms can also vary by product, purchase date, and state, especially for theft-and-loss insurance. Check the plan shown under AppleCare & Warranty before assuming a repair, replacement, or missing-device claim is covered.
Match The Plan To Your Situation
The plan to compare first depends on how many devices you own and whether losing one would be the larger financial risk. Use the table below to narrow the choice before paying for coverage.
| Your Situation | Plan To Compare First | Why It Fits |
|---|---|---|
| One Mac, display, AirPods, HomePod, or Apple TV | AppleCare+ | Single-device hardware, battery, support, and accidental-damage coverage |
| One iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch where theft matters | AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss | Single-device coverage plus up to two theft-or-loss claims every 12 months |
| Two or three eligible Apple devices | AppleCare One | One monthly plan can cover several products and includes theft-and-loss protection for eligible mobile devices |
| An older device outside the normal 60-day AppleCare+ window | AppleCare One | Eligible devices up to four years old may qualify after a condition check |
| A battery below 80% capacity on an active plan | Your current AppleCare plan | Battery service is covered at no additional charge when the threshold is met |
AppleCare makes the most sense when the service fees are easier to absorb than a full repair or replacement bill, or when theft-and-loss protection covers a risk you actually have. Check the exact device, plan name, renewal status, and deductible before filing a claim so you know what Apple will cover and what you will pay.
