How To Pair An Apple Watch | From Scan To Watch Face

Apple Watch pairing takes an iPhone nearby, a scan of the watch animation, and a few on-screen setup choices.

A pairing animation only gets you halfway there: the iPhone must be compatible, open past the Lock Screen, online, and ready to finish account setup. Learning how to pair an Apple Watch comes down to preparing both devices, scanning the watch face, and completing the prompts without separating the phone and watch.

For Apple Watch Ultra 3, Apple Watch Series 11, and Apple Watch SE 3, Apple currently requires an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26 or later. Older Apple Watch models can work with different iPhone and iOS combinations, so the model matters if you are pairing an older watch.

Before You Pair The Watch

Apple Watch setup needs an up-to-date iPhone, Bluetooth turned on, and a Wi-Fi or cellular connection on the iPhone. Keep the iPhone past the Lock Screen and the watch close to it throughout pairing and the first sync.

  • Update the iPhone to the newest iOS version available for that device.
  • Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone.
  • Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
  • Charge the Apple Watch if it will not power on.
  • Have the Apple Account password ready in case setup asks for it.

Current Apple Watch Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3 models need an iPhone 11 or newer with iOS 26 or newer. An older watch may pair with an older iPhone, but its minimum requirements depend on the exact Apple Watch generation and watchOS version.

Pairing An Apple Watch: What The Setup Screens Mean

The pairing flow starts on the watch, then moves to the Apple Watch app on the iPhone. Apple uses the moving watch-face animation to identify the watch and link it to the phone.

  1. Press and hold the Apple Watch side button until the Apple logo appears, then put the watch on your wrist.
  2. Hold the iPhone, opened past the Lock Screen, close to the watch. When the iPhone shows Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch, tap Continue.
  3. If that prompt never appears, open the Apple Watch app, tap All Watches, then tap Add Watch.
  4. Tap Set Up for Myself for your own watch.
  5. Position the iPhone so the Apple Watch face sits inside the camera viewfinder. Wait until the iPhone reports that the watch is paired.
  6. Choose Set Up as New Apple Watch if this is your first watch, or use the restore and Express Setup choices shown for a watch tied to your current iPhone.
  7. Choose the wrist, accept the terms, sign in to your Apple Account when asked, and create a passcode if you want features such as Apple Pay.

The watch face appears when the main pairing procedure is finished. Keep the two devices near each other after that point because apps, settings, and other data can continue syncing in the background.

What Each Pairing Screen Does

Each setup screen either connects the devices, restores prior data, or turns on account and security features. Knowing what each prompt controls makes it easier to choose without backing out of setup.

Screen Or Prompt What To Choose What It Does
Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch Continue Starts pairing from the nearby iPhone.
Who is this Apple Watch for? Set Up for Myself Links the watch to your own iPhone and Apple Account.
Pairing animation Scan with the iPhone camera Identifies the watch and pairs it to the iPhone.
New or existing watch setup Set Up as New Apple Watch or a shown backup Chooses a fresh setup or restores previous watch data.
Wrist selection Left or right wrist Sets screen orientation and button placement behavior.
Apple Account Sign in when asked Enables account-linked services and handles Activation Lock.
Passcode Create a Passcode, Add a Long Passcode, or skip Protects the watch; Apple Pay needs a passcode.
Syncing screen Keep devices nearby Transfers settings, apps, and data after pairing.

Apple’s current Apple Watch setup instructions confirm the present pairing steps and the iPhone 11 with iOS 26 requirement for Apple Watch Ultra 3, Series 11, and SE 3.

What If The Pairing Animation Does Not Work?

Apple Watch can be paired manually when the camera cannot read the animation or the animation never appears. Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually on the iPhone and follow the prompts shown on both devices.

A watch face instead of the pairing animation usually means the Apple Watch is already paired to an iPhone. If you still have that iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, tap All Watches, tap the info button beside the watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch.

Unpairing from the paired iPhone erases the watch and removes Activation Lock. If the watch is erased directly without the paired iPhone, Activation Lock remains and the Apple Account previously used on the watch is still required.

Pairing A Used Watch Or One Linked To Another iPhone

A used Apple Watch must be removed from the previous owner’s Apple Account before a new owner can finish setup. An Activation Lock screen means the watch is still linked to that account.

If you own the Apple Account already tied to the watch, enter that account’s email address and password when setup asks. If somebody else owned the watch, that person has to remove Activation Lock; erasing the watch alone does not remove the account link.

Can You Pair An Apple Watch To A New iPhone?

Yes, an existing Apple Watch can move to a new iPhone, but the transfer works differently from pairing a brand-new watch. Apple says the old and new iPhones should be on Wi-Fi, while the Apple Watch and new iPhone should each have at least 50 percent charge.

Update the old iPhone and Apple Watch, back up the old iPhone, then set up the new iPhone from that backup. If the new iPhone asks whether you want to use the Apple Watch, keep the watch open and on your wrist, then tap Continue. If the Apple Watch app instead shows Start Pairing, unpair the watch first and set it up again.

When Pairing Still Fails

Most failed pairings come from software, power, an existing pairing, or Activation Lock rather than a broken radio. Work through the symptom that matches what is on the screen instead of repeatedly rescanning the animation.

What You See Likely Cause What To Do
Watch will not turn on Battery is too low Charge the Apple Watch, then power it on again.
No nearby setup prompt Automatic prompt did not appear Open Apple Watch > All Watches > Add Watch.
Camera cannot read animation Camera pairing failed Tap Pair Apple Watch Manually.
Watch shows a normal watch face Watch is already paired Unpair or erase it before pairing again.
Activation Lock appears Watch is linked to an Apple Account Enter the linked account credentials or have the previous owner remove the lock.
Setup reports an error Software or temporary connection issue Update iOS, restart the iPhone, then restart the Apple Watch.

From Power-On To A Finished Watch Face

A successful setup can be checked in seven moves, from turning on the watch to seeing its normal watch face. Use this sequence when you want one compact list without the extra screen-by-screen detail.

  1. Update the iPhone, turn on Bluetooth, and connect the phone to Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  2. Power on the Apple Watch with the side button and keep it beside the iPhone, opened past the Lock Screen.
  3. Tap Continue, or use Apple Watch > All Watches > Add Watch.
  4. Tap Set Up for Myself, then scan the watch animation with the iPhone camera.
  5. Choose new setup or a displayed backup, then select the wrist and complete the account prompts.
  6. Create a passcode if needed, finish the remaining feature choices, and keep both devices close while syncing.
  7. Look for the normal Apple Watch face. Once it appears, the main pairing process is complete.
