Copying Text On A Chromebook: The Shortcuts That Matter

Chromebook text copying starts by selecting the exact words you want, then sending that selection to the clipboard with Ctrl + C. Nothing visibly moves when the copy works; the original text stays in place while a copy is held for pasting.

1. Place the pointer at the start of the text.
2. Press and hold the touchpad with one finger, then drag across the words until the full passage is selected.
3. Release the touchpad and press Ctrl + C.
4. Click where you want the copied text to go.
5. Press Ctrl + V.

The copied words should appear at the cursor without removing the original. If you want to move text instead of duplicate it, use Ctrl + X to cut the selection, then Ctrl + V to place it elsewhere.

A Chromebook touchpad or mouse can copy text without a keyboard shortcut by opening the context menu after the text is selected. On the built-in touchpad, a two-finger tap or press acts as a right-click.

Google documents double-tapping or pressing and holding a word to open the text action menu, then dragging across more words to extend the selection.

Double-tap the first word, drag across the rest of the passage, then use Ctrl + C if the Chromebook keyboard is available. Google notes that its standard touchscreen text-editing gestures do not apply to Google Docs, which uses its own editing behavior. In Docs, the keyboard shortcut avoids that touch-interface difference.

Use Clipboard History When You Need An Earlier Copy

ChromeOS can show recent clipboard items instead of limiting you to the last thing you copied. Press Search + V or Launcher + V, choose the item you want, and paste it into the active text field.

Google’s current shortcut documentation says you can select up to five items to copy to the clipboard. You can move through the clipboard menu with the arrow keys or Tab, then press Enter to paste the selected item. Chromebook copy-and-paste problems usually come from the selection, the destination, or the app handling the shortcut differently. Test a small piece of plain text in a simple field first; that separates a system-wide problem from a page-specific one.

If Ctrl + C seems to do nothing, make sure the text is still selected before pressing the shortcut. If the pasted result carries unwanted fonts or colors, try Ctrl + Shift + V to paste as plain text. A page may also block text selection, so another selectable paragraph is a useful comparison.
