Your Element TV is shutting itself off. It might happen 10 seconds after you turn it on, or it might cut out randomly during a movie. Either way, there’s a specific reason — and this guide covers every one of them, starting with the fastest fixes first.
Most cases come down to three things: a setting you haven’t noticed, an HDMI device sending a shutdown command, or a failing component inside the TV. Work through the sections below in order based on when your TV shuts off.
What the Shutoff Timing Tells You
The timing of when your TV turns off is the fastest way to narrow down the cause. Don’t skip this step — it routes you to the right fix immediately.
Shuts Off Within 10–30 Seconds
This almost always points to a hardware problem. A failing power supply board can’t sustain stable output long enough to keep the TV running. Thermal protection can also trigger an immediate shutdown if the TV has been left off for a while and the startup circuit detects a fault.
Shuts Off After 2–10 Minutes
Software settings are the most likely cause here. Sleep timers, auto power off, and no-signal shutoff features are all designed to kill the TV after a short idle period. ECO mode on some Element models is aggressive enough to do this too.
Shuts Off Randomly Throughout the Day
Random shutoffs — sometimes after 20 minutes, sometimes after 2 hours — usually point to HDMI-CEC interference from a connected device, an unstable power source, or intermittent capacitor failure inside the TV.
Start with the section that matches your pattern. Don’t waste time factory resetting if the TV can’t stay on for 30 seconds — that’s a hardware issue, not a software one.
1. Check These Settings First
If your TV shuts off after a few minutes, especially when you’re not actively using it, one of these settings is almost certainly the reason.

Sleep Timer
On Element Roku TVs: press Home → Settings → System → Time → Sleep Timer. If it’s set to 30 or 60 minutes, that’s your answer. Set it to Off.
On non-Roku Element models: Menu → Setup → Time → Sleep Timer → Off.
Auto Power Off and No-Signal Shutoff
Element TVs include an Auto Power Off feature that cuts the TV after 4 hours of inactivity. There’s also a No Signal shutoff that triggers after roughly 15 minutes with no input detected.
On Roku OS: Home → Settings → System → Power → Auto Power Off. Set it to Never or disable it entirely.
ECO Mode
Some Element models have an Energy Saving mode that can cause unexpected power cuts. Go to Menu → Picture → Advanced Settings → Energy Saving and turn it off.
2. Disable HDMI-CEC
HDMI-CEC is a protocol that lets connected devices control each other’s power states. When your soundbar, game console, Roku stick, or cable box sends a “standby” command, your Element TV obeys it — even if you didn’t touch the remote.
This is one of the most common causes of random shutoffs that people blame on the TV itself. The TV is doing exactly what it was told to do by another device.
On Element Roku TVs: Home → Settings → System → Control other devices (CEC). Toggle it off.
On other Element models: Menu → Setup → HDMI Settings → HDMI Control → Off.
After disabling CEC, unplug every HDMI device for 60 seconds and test the TV alone for 20–30 minutes. If it stays on, one of those devices was the source of the shutdown command.

3. Rule Out the Power Source
Before assuming the TV is at fault, test the power source.
Plug the TV directly into a wall outlet. Skip the surge protector and power strip for this test. Element TVs draw between 40–120 watts depending on screen size, and an overloaded or aging surge protector can drop voltage under load — enough to cause intermittent shutoffs that look exactly like a TV hardware fault.
Also try a different outlet on a different circuit. A loose neutral wire in a wall outlet creates voltage fluctuations that can knock the TV off mid-use.

4. Check the Remote Control
A stuck or damaged power button on your remote can send a continuous signal to the TV, cycling it off repeatedly.
Remove the batteries from your Element remote and test the TV for 15–20 minutes without it. If the TV stays on, the remote is sending unintended commands.
Inspect the power button physically — if it feels sticky or is physically depressed, that’s the cause. If yours is damaged, pick up a replacement remote for Element TVs and use the Element TV remote codes to program it.
5. Fix Overheating
Element TVs have a thermal protection circuit. When the internal temperature of the main board exceeds a safe threshold, the TV shuts off automatically to prevent component damage.
Signs your Element TV is overheating:
- The back panel feels hot after 20–30 minutes of use
- The TV shuts off faster as the room gets warmer
- Shutoffs happen more frequently in summer or in enclosed spaces
The fix is almost always airflow. The TV needs at least 4 inches of clearance on all sides. If it’s in a closed cabinet or sitting flush against a wall, heat builds up fast.
Use compressed air to blow dust out of the rear vents. Dust buildup on internal components acts as insulation and raises operating temperatures significantly. On a TV that hasn’t been cleaned in 2–3 years, this alone can solve repeated shutoffs.
Moving the TV from a closed shelf to an open surface often stops the problem immediately.
6. Inspect the Power Supply Board

If your Element TV shuts off within 10–30 seconds of turning on and none of the fixes above apply, the power supply board is the most likely cause.
The power board converts AC power from the wall into the DC voltages the TV’s internal circuits require. When it starts failing — typically from age, heat stress, or a power surge — it can’t maintain stable output. The TV turns on briefly and shuts off as soon as it tries to draw full current load.
Visual Check for Bad Capacitors
Unplug the TV completely and wait 2 minutes before opening it. Remove the back panel (usually 6–10 Phillips screws on most Element models). The power supply board is the one closest to where the power cord enters the TV.
Look for these signs of capacitor failure:
- Tops that are domed or bulging upward (they should be perfectly flat)
- Brown residue or dried crust around the base of the cylinder
- Any component that looks swollen or discolored
Even one bulging capacitor can cause the exact shutoff pattern you’re seeing. Replacement capacitors cost $1–3 each at electronics suppliers. Replacing them requires a soldering iron and about 45 minutes of work.

7. Run a Factory Reset
If the TV shuts off after a few minutes and you’ve confirmed the settings above look correct, a firmware bug may be the cause.
On Element Roku TVs: Home → Settings → System → Advanced System Settings → Factory Reset → Factory Reset Everything. Enter the 4-digit PIN shown on screen.
This clears all settings, installed apps, and preferences. The TV restarts as if it’s new. Setup takes about 5 minutes.
Only do this after trying the settings-based fixes above — it won’t solve a hardware fault, and it’s not worth the setup time if a capacitor is the real problem.
8. Update the Firmware
Outdated firmware can introduce power management bugs on Element Roku TVs. Roku OS devices update automatically over Wi-Fi, but the update sometimes doesn’t run if the TV was turned off during a scheduled update window.
To force a manual check: Home → Settings → System → System Update → Check Now.
Install any available updates and let the TV restart fully. This takes 3–5 minutes. Test the TV afterward — a firmware bug causing shutoffs will usually be resolved after the update.
9. Know When to Replace Instead of Repair
If the power board has failed and the TV is more than 7 years old, replacement is usually the more practical choice.
