Link Your Microsoft Account Before Hardware Changes
A Microsoft account link gives the Activation troubleshooter a license record to use after a major hardware replacement. The link helps most when Windows already shows an activated digital license.
- Sign in as an administrator, then open Start > Settings > Accounts > Your info.
- Confirm that an email address appears above Administrator; that indicates a Microsoft account rather than a local account.
- Return to the Activation page, select Add an account, and sign in when that option appears.
The activation message will state that the digital license is linked to your Microsoft account. A local account can still use Windows, but it cannot supply the same account-based reactivation record.
