A green dot beside your profile photo can give away that you’re browsing before you’re ready to answer. The control behind how to appear offline on Instagram is Activity Status; once it’s off, Instagram stops showing your current or last-active status to people you follow or message.
The setting does not sign you out, stop messages, or hide every action you take. You can keep scrolling, posting, and using Direct messages while your presence indicator stays hidden.
How To Turn Off Activity Status In The Instagram App
Instagram’s Activity Status can be switched off from the messaging privacy controls on iPhone and Android. The change applies to the account whose setting you edit.
- Open Instagram and tap your profile picture in the bottom-right corner.
- Tap the Menu button – the three horizontal lines in the top-right corner.
- Under the controls for how others can interact with you, tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show Activity Status.
- Turn off the Show Activity Status toggle.
The toggle should now be in the off position. Instagram will no longer share your current or last-active status through the Activity Status feature.
Appearing Offline On Instagram: What Activity Status Hides
Instagram’s Activity Status controls presence signals, not the visibility of your whole account. Meta says the feature shows when you are currently active or when you were last active to people you follow and people you message.
Meta also makes the setting reciprocal: when Activity Status is off, you cannot see other accounts’ Activity Status either.

The Instagram Activity Status instructions confirm both sides of the setting: your presence status is hidden, and you also lose access to other people’s Activity Status.
How To Hide Activity Status On Instagram.com
Instagram.com has the same Activity Status control, but the desktop path starts from the left-side menu. Use the browser setting if you are already on a computer.
- Open Instagram.com and click More in the bottom-left corner.
- Click Settings.
- Under the interaction controls, click Messages and story replies.
- Click Show Activity Status.
- Turn off Show Activity Status.
The switch will show as off. Your account stops sharing the green-dot and last-active presence signals controlled by Activity Status.
Can People Still Tell You’re Using Instagram?
Visible actions can still show that you were recently using Instagram, even when Activity Status is off. A new post, comment, like, or sent message can reveal activity because those actions are separate from the presence indicator.
Read receipts are another separate signal. Meta’s Instagram messaging documentation says read receipts can be disabled for all chats or for individual chats, so someone does not need to see “Seen” just because you opened a message.
- From your profile, tap the top-right Menu button.
- Tap Messages and story replies.
- Tap Show read receipts.
- Turn the read-receipt toggle off if you want that signal hidden too.
The read-receipt switch now shows off for the chats covered by that setting. Activity Status and read receipts are independent controls, so change both if your goal is quieter Direct-message use.
Hide Your Online Status From One Person
Instagram’s Restrict feature can hide your online status and read receipts from one specific account without switching Activity Status off for everyone. Instagram says a restricted person cannot see when you are online or whether you read that person’s messages.
- Open the Direct chat with the person.
- Tap the person’s name at the top of the chat.
- Tap the top-right Options button, then tap Restrict.
- Tap Restrict again to confirm.
The chat moves from your main Direct inbox to Message Requests, which confirms the restriction is active. Restrict also changes how that person’s comments and notifications are handled, so it is more than a one-person presence switch.
Why Do You Still Look Active After Turning It Off?
Most “still online” cases come from changing a nearby setting instead of Activity Status, or from another visible signal such as read receipts. Checking the exact toggle usually settles the problem.

Use These Settings Together
Instagram’s presence controls work well when each signal is handled for what it actually reveals. Activity Status hides online presence, while read receipts handle whether a chat shows that you opened a message.
- Turn off Show Activity Status to remove your current and last-active presence status.
- Turn off Show read receipts if you also want to avoid sending “Seen” indicators.
- Use Sleep mode only if you want Instagram to signal that you are in Sleep mode; it does not make your presence invisible.
- Avoid visible actions when timing matters, since posts, comments, likes, and sent messages can still show that you were recently around.
With Activity Status off – and read receipts off if you want them hidden – you can use Instagram without broadcasting the green dot or last-active timestamp.
