How To Apply Dark Mode in Google | Darken Search, Not Chrome

A bright search page can feel harsh in a dim room, and how to apply dark mode in Google comes down to Google Search’s Appearance control. On a computer, the current path is Settings > See all settings > Appearance > Dark theme; on a phone or tablet, use More > Settings and choose Dark theme under Appearance.

Google Search’s dark theme changes Search pages such as the Google homepage, search results, and Search settings. The setting does not automatically darken the Chrome toolbar, every website you open, or every Google product, so changing the correct appearance control matters.

How Do You Turn On Dark Theme On A Computer?

Google Search on desktop has a dedicated appearance setting that works in browsers such as Chrome and Firefox. Start from a Google results page, then choose the theme you want and save it.

1. Open Google Search on your computer and run any search.
2. If you want your Search settings tied to your Google Account, sign in first. A profile picture or initial at the top right means you are already signed in.
3. At the top left of the results page, click Settings, then See all settings.
4. In the left menu, click Appearance.
5. Select Dark theme.
6. Scroll to the bottom and click Save.

The results page should switch to light text on a dark background. Google also offers Device default, which makes Search follow the color scheme used by your computer instead of staying dark all the time.

Choose Dark Theme Or Device Default

Google Search gives you three appearance choices, and each one behaves differently. Dark theme keeps Search pages dark, while Device default lets Search change when the device color scheme changes.

• Dark theme: light text appears on a dark Search background.
• Device default: Google Search automatically matches the color scheme of the computer, phone, or tablet.
• Light theme: dark text appears on a light Search background.

Choose Dark theme if you do not want a scheduled system theme or another device appearance change to turn Search light later. Choose Device default when you want Google Search to follow the rest of the device automatically.

Apply Dark Mode In Google Search: Where The Setting Lives

Google Search offers the same three appearance choices across desktop and mobile browsers: Device default, Dark theme, and Light theme. The menu location changes by device, and the Google app uses a different rule.

Turn On Dark Theme On Android, iPhone, Or iPad

Google Search on mobile puts the appearance setting behind the menu on a search results page. The Android and iPhone/iPad instructions use the same sequence.

1. Open Google Search in your mobile browser and run a search.
2. Sign in if you want the preference associated with your Google Account across signed-in mobile devices and tablets.
3. At the top left, tap More, then tap Settings.
4. Under Appearance, choose Dark theme.

The page changes to a dark background with light text. For a faster switch later, Google’s mobile menu can also show Dark theme: On or Dark theme: Off, letting you flip the Search theme without reopening the full settings page.

Google App And Chrome Use Different Theme Controls

The Google app follows your phone or tablet’s device theme, while Chrome has its own browser theme controls. Changing Google Search to dark mode does not mean Chrome’s tabs, toolbar, settings pages, or unrelated websites will all turn dark.

On Android or iPhone, change the device to dark appearance if the Google app itself is the part you want dark. If only the browser frame looks wrong, change Chrome’s theme separately rather than changing Google Search again.

• Google Search dark: change Appearance in Google Search settings.
• Google app dark: use the device’s dark appearance.
• Chrome interface dark: use Chrome’s own theme control.

Why Does Google Search Keep Switching Back To Light?

Google Search usually returns to a light appearance because Device default is selected, the desktop setting was not saved, or the wrong layer was changed. A fixed Dark theme selection avoids the device-theme switch.

Set Google Search To Stay Dark

A fixed dark Search theme takes only a few choices once you are in the correct menu. Use Device default only when you want Search to change along with your computer, phone, or tablet.

1. Run a search on Google Search.
2. On desktop, open Settings > See all settings; on mobile, open More > Settings.
3. Open Appearance and choose Dark theme.
4. On desktop, click Save.
5. Check the Google homepage and a results page. Both should use light text on a dark background.

If the Google app or Chrome itself still looks light, change that product’s theme separately. Google Search dark mode controls Search pages; it is not a universal dark-mode switch for every Google screen.
