Block a sender in Messages by opening the conversation, tapping the person’s icon, choosing Info, and tapping Block Contact.
One unwanted sender can fill your Lock Screen long before you find the control that stops them. The sequence below shows how to block messages on an iPhone from a specific sender, then how to screen unknown numbers without blocking them all.
Blocking is different from muting, deleting, reporting spam, or screening unknown senders. The method you choose decides whether the message is stopped, moved out of your main list, or simply silenced.
Block One Sender From A Messages Conversation
Messages can block a specific person or phone number directly from the conversation. New messages from that blocked sender are not delivered, and the sender is not told that you blocked them.
- Open Messages and open the conversation with the sender.
- Tap the person’s icon at the top of the conversation.
- Tap Info.
- Scroll down and tap Block Contact.
The contact is now blocked. On iOS 26, you can confirm it under Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts.
Where Do Blocked Contacts Live In iOS 26?
iOS 26 keeps blocked contacts in one central list under Privacy & Security. The Settings method works well when the person is already saved in Contacts or when you want to review several blocks at once.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Tap Blocked Contacts.
- Tap Add Blocked Contact and select the contact.
- Tap Block Contact.
The selected person appears in the blocked list. If your iPhone is still on iOS 18 or earlier and you do not have the centralized iOS 26 list, use the Messages conversation method above.
Screen Unknown Senders Without Blocking Everyone
Screen Unknown Senders separates unfamiliar senders instead of blocking every new number. On iOS 26, those messages can be moved away from the main conversation list while you choose which unknown-message categories may still notify you.
- Open Messages.
- Tap the Filters button at the top right of the conversation list.
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Turn on Screen Unknown Senders.
- To change alerts, tap Allow Notifications and choose which available categories may notify you.
The Unknown Senders filter now holds screened conversations. You can also reach the main switch through Settings > Apps > Messages > Unknown Senders.
Screening does not replace blocking. When one unknown number keeps contacting you, open that conversation and block the sender directly.
Blocking Messages On iPhone: What Each Control Does
iPhone offers several controls that look similar but produce different results. Blocking stops delivery from a specific sender; screening, muting, reporting, and deleting handle different problems.

Apple’s current iPhone blocking instructions state that a blocked number can still leave voicemail without sending you a notification, while messages from the blocked number are not delivered.
What Happens After You Block Someone?
An iPhone contact block reaches beyond the Messages conversation. Apple says a contact blocked in Messages is also blocked in Phone, FaceTime, Mail, Calendar, and other Apple apps, and the sender is not notified about the block.
- Direct messages from the blocked sender are not delivered.
- Blocked callers can still leave voicemail, but you do not receive a voicemail notification.
- A blocked person can still be present in a shared group conversation. You do not see that person’s messages there, but they can see yours.
- Apple says a block applies across Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
If you wanted silence rather than a full contact block, use Hide Alerts instead. Open the conversation, tap the contact or icon at the top, then turn on Hide Alerts; the thread remains available and its alert icon shows that notifications are muted.
If A Blocked Sender Still Reaches You
A sender can appear to get around a block when they use a different phone number or email address, when you share a group conversation, or when you reported spam without also blocking. Check the blocked list first, then match the symptom below to the next action.

The blocked list gives you a direct check when a block seems uncertain. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts and confirm the exact person, phone number, or email address is present.
Match The Control To What You Want To Stop
The goal determines which Messages control to use. One sender calls for a block, broad unknown traffic calls for screening, and a conversation you still need may only need muted alerts.
- For one unwanted sender, use Block Contact from the conversation.
- For unfamiliar numbers in bulk, turn on Screen Unknown Senders.
- For suspected junk, use Report Spam and block that sender if you want future delivery stopped.
- For a conversation you still want to read, turn on Hide Alerts instead of blocking.
- To reverse a block in iOS 26, open Settings > Privacy & Security > Blocked Contacts, select the contact, and tap Unblock Contact.
After the matching control is set, the result is visible in Messages: blocked senders stop delivering direct messages, screened senders move out of the main list, and muted threads remain available without their normal alerts.
