A MacBook background changes in Wallpaper settings, where you can choose an Apple image, color, aerial, or one of your own photos.
A plain desktop gets old fast, and learning how to change a MacBook background takes only a few clicks in current macOS. Open the Apple menu in the top-left corner, choose System Settings, select Wallpaper, then pick a built-in image or add your own photo. The desktop updates as soon as you select the new wallpaper.
Apple also gives you dynamic images, aerials, solid colors, rotating choices, and direct shortcuts from Finder, Photos, and Safari. The steps below use the current macOS layout, with the older System Preferences path covered separately for MacBooks that have not moved to the newer settings app.
Change A MacBook Wallpaper From System Settings
Current macOS releases place MacBook wallpaper controls under System Settings > Wallpaper. Picking a thumbnail changes the desktop right away, while extra controls appear only for wallpaper types that support them.
- Click the Apple menu at the top-left of the screen, then choose System Settings.
- Scroll down the left sidebar if needed, then click Wallpaper.
- Choose from Dynamic Wallpapers, Your Photos, the aerial categories, Shuffle Aerials, Pictures, or Colors.
- Click the wallpaper thumbnail you want. If a down-arrow icon appears on an Apple wallpaper, click the image to download and use it.

Your desktop should redraw with the selected image, and the current wallpaper thumbnail at the top of Wallpaper settings should match it.
How Do You Use Your Own Photo?
Your own photo can come from the Photos library, a single image file, a Finder folder, or a Photos album. Apple places all four choices under Your Photos in Wallpaper settings.
- Open System Settings > Wallpaper.
- Scroll to Your Photos, then click Add Photo.
- Choose Choose from Photos for the Photos library, Choose File for one saved image, or Choose Folder for a Finder folder.
- For an album or folder from Photos, select it under Photo Sets.
- Select the image or source you want and complete the chooser that opens.
The chosen image appears in Your Photos and can be selected as the desktop wallpaper. You can also drag an image from the desktop or a Finder folder onto the current wallpaper thumbnail at the top of the settings page.

Built-In Wallpaper Choices And Their Behavior
Apple’s built-in choices differ mainly in whether the image stays still, reacts to time, or rotates. Apple’s current Mac wallpaper instructions list Dynamic Wallpapers, aerial categories, Shuffle Aerials, Pictures, Colors, and personal photos in the same settings panel.
Dynamic Wallpapers can change brightness through the day. When a pop-up control is available, Automatic follows the Mac’s light or dark appearance, Dynamic changes with the time of day, and the two still choices hold a fixed light or dark version.
Apple’s Cityscape, Underwater, and Earth aerials can animate as the Mac locks or unlocks. Apple also states that a selected aerial is used as the screen saver by default, while Shuffle Aerials lets you choose how often the wallpaper rotates.
Why Isn’t The New Background Showing Everywhere?
A MacBook can show different wallpaper across desktop Spaces or connected displays unless Show on all Spaces is turned on. The switch sits with the current wallpaper controls in Wallpaper settings.
Open System Settings > Wallpaper, then turn on Show on all Spaces if you want the same wallpaper across every desktop Space and display. Once the switch is on, moving between Spaces or displays should show the same selected background.

Older macOS Uses A Different Menu
macOS Monterey 12 uses System Preferences instead of the newer System Settings app. Apple documents the older path as Apple menu > System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop.
Use the left side of the Desktop pane to browse Apple pictures, colors, Photos, or folders, then click a picture on the right. A selected image becomes the desktop picture immediately. If a MacBook uses this older interface, following the Monterey path is more reliable than hunting for a Wallpaper sidebar item that is not there.
Set Your Background From One Screen
System Settings keeps the main wallpaper choices together on current macOS, so you can finish the change without opening extra utilities. Use this final set of steps when you just want the desktop changed and done.
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Click Wallpaper in the sidebar.
- Pick an Apple wallpaper, or open Your Photos and use Add Photo.
- Click the image you want to use.
- Set any available appearance, shuffle, size, or position control for that wallpaper.
- Turn on Show on all Spaces if every Space and connected display should match.
The job is complete when the desktop shows the selected image and the current wallpaper thumbnail in System Settings matches it.
