How to Convert a Wired Speaker to Wireless | Add Bluetooth

A powered speaker needs a Bluetooth receiver; a passive speaker needs a Bluetooth amplifier, and both still need power somewhere.

Throwing away a good speaker just to lose one source cable makes little sense. Learning how to convert a wired speaker to wireless starts with one check: does the speaker already have its own amplifier? That answer determines whether you add a Bluetooth receiver or a Bluetooth amplifier.

The conversion removes the cable between your phone, tablet, computer, or other source and the audio system. It does not magically send electrical power through the air, so powered speakers still need AC power and passive speakers still need speaker wire from an amplifier.

Is Your Speaker Powered Or Passive?

A powered speaker has amplification built in, while a passive speaker must be driven by a separate amplifier. Picking the wrong adapter can leave you with no sound or connect an amplified output to an input that was never meant to receive it.

Do not connect a passive speaker directly to a small Bluetooth receiver with RCA or 3.5 mm outputs. Those outputs carry a line-level signal and do not provide the power needed to drive a passive speaker.

Add Bluetooth To A Powered Speaker

A powered speaker only needs a receiver that can feed one of its existing audio inputs. Use the speaker’s normal line-level input, not a speaker-level terminal from an external amplifier.

  1. Turn the speaker volume down and switch the speaker off.
  2. Connect the Bluetooth receiver’s output to the speaker’s matching input. Use 3.5 mm-to-3.5 mm, RCA-to-RCA, or optical when both devices support that connection.

A Bluetooth amplifier makes the source-to-amplifier connection wireless, not the amplifier-to-speaker connection. To remove the AC cord as well, you would need a battery-powered amplifier and a charging setup matched to its electrical requirements, which is a separate hardware project.

What Does Wireless Actually Remove?

Wireless conversion usually removes the long audio cable from the source, while power cables and short speaker wires remain. That distinction matters most when the goal is room placement rather than a completely cable-free cabinet.

TV use needs one extra check: lip sync. Bluetooth adds encoding, transmission, and decoding time, so test speech against the picture before mounting or hiding the hardware permanently.

Fix Pairing, Hum, Delay, Or Weak Sound

Most failed conversions come from the wrong signal level, the wrong input, a pairing conflict, or poor wireless placement. Work through the symptom instead of replacing the speaker first.
