On iPhone, delete a Telegram account in Settings > Privacy and Security > If Away For > Delete Account Now, then confirm deletion.
Deleting the Telegram app leaves your account and cloud data in place. To learn how to delete a Telegram account on an iPhone, use Telegram’s account controls rather than removing the app icon.
The iPhone app now includes an immediate account-deletion option. Before using it, check that the phone number shown in Settings belongs to the account you want to remove, especially if you use more than one Telegram account.
Deleting A Telegram Account On iPhone: The In-App Steps
Telegram for iPhone can permanently remove an account from inside the app. The current iOS controls place the deletion option under Settings > Privacy and Security.
- Open Telegram and tap Settings in the bottom navigation area.
- Tap Privacy and Security.
- Scroll to the account-deletion area and tap If Away For.
- Choose Delete Account Now.
- Read Telegram’s account-removal screen, then tap Continue.
- Enter the phone number attached to the account when Telegram asks for it.
- If 2-Step Verification is enabled, enter your Telegram password when prompted.
- At the final warning, tap Delete My Account to confirm.
Telegram displays a confirmation after the deletion finishes. Once that message appears, the old account cannot be restored by signing back in.
Before You Confirm Deletion
Telegram account deletion removes account data from Telegram and cannot be undone. Messages already received by other people can remain in their copies of chats, while groups and channels you created can continue without you.
If you own a group or channel that still matters, transfer ownership before deleting the account. Telegram’s iPhone interface points owners to Chat Info > Edit > Admins for ownership transfer.
| Account Item | What Deletion Does | What Remains |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud chats | Your account loses its Telegram message history | Other participants may keep their copies |
| Saved Messages | Your saved messages, media and files become inaccessible | No account copy remains for you |
| Telegram contacts | Contacts tied to the deleted account are removed | People may still have your phone number in their own contacts |
| Groups you created | Your creator account disappears | The group can continue with existing admins |
| Channels you created | Your creator account disappears | The channel can remain with existing admins |
| Messages sent to others | Your account is removed | Recipients can retain their message copies |
| App Store subscription billing | Deleting Telegram does not manage Apple’s subscription record | Cancel the subscription separately in iPhone Settings if one exists |
Use The Browser If The In-App Button Is Missing
Telegram also provides an account-deactivation website for accounts that cannot use the in-app deletion control. Telegram says the confirmation code for this page arrives inside Telegram rather than by SMS.
Open the Telegram account-deactivation page, enter your phone number in international format, tap Next, then enter the confirmation code Telegram sends to your account. After signing in, follow the account-deletion prompt shown on the page.
If the confirmation code is accepted, Telegram opens the account-management page for that signed-in number. Complete the deletion prompt there and read the final confirmation before closing the browser.
Telegram recommends a non-mobile browser for this web method. On an iPhone, the in-app option is usually the more direct choice when Delete Account Now is available.
What Happens After Telegram Deletes Your Account?
A deleted Telegram account does not come back when you reinstall the app. If you register the same phone number again later, Telegram treats the registration as a new account without the old history, contacts or groups.
Deleting an account also differs from logging out. Logging out keeps cloud messages tied to the account, while permanent deletion removes the account data Telegram says it stores for that account.
Immediate Deletion Versus Automatic Deletion
Telegram gives you two different account-removal choices: delete the account now, or let inactivity trigger deletion later. Telegram’s current FAQ lists 18 months as the default inactivity period, and the app lets you change that period in settings.
| Your Goal | Action To Take | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Leave Telegram now | Use Delete Account Now | The account is removed after confirmation |
| Take a break | Log out or stop using the app | The account stays available until its inactivity setting is reached |
| Remove Telegram from the iPhone only | Delete the app from iOS | The Telegram account itself remains |
| Let Telegram remove an unused account later | Set the If Away For period | Deletion occurs after that full period without activity |
| Keep the account but change numbers | Use Settings and change the account phone number | Chats and account data stay with the account |
Do You Need To Cancel A Telegram Subscription Separately?
An App Store-billed Telegram subscription should be canceled through Apple if you do not want future renewal charges. Telegram states that deleting the account or deleting the app does not necessarily stop billing handled by the App Store.
On iPhone, open the Apple Settings app, tap your name, open Subscriptions, select the Telegram subscription, and tap Cancel Subscription if it is active. If no cancel button appears, Apple says the subscription is already canceled.
Four Checks Before The Last Tap
Telegram account deletion makes sense only after the account, ownership and billing details are settled. Use these checks immediately before tapping Delete My Account.
- Confirm the phone number in Telegram Settings matches the account you intend to erase.
- Save any messages or files you still need, because Saved Messages and account media will no longer be available from the deleted account.
- Transfer any group or channel ownership that should continue under another person.
- Cancel any App Store-billed Telegram subscription separately if you do not want it to renew.
If those four items are handled, follow Settings > Privacy and Security > If Away For > Delete Account Now, complete Telegram’s verification prompts, and confirm Delete My Account. The deletion confirmation on screen is the point that tells you the account removal completed.
