How to Disable Gemini | Stop It From Taking Over Android

Set Android’s default digital assistant to None, then change Gemini’s voice, power-button, lock-screen, and activity settings as needed.

A long-press that suddenly opens an AI panel is usually the clue; on Android, the steps for how to disable Gemini depend on whether you want it gone as the phone’s assistant or merely silent. Android gives you separate controls for the default assistant, voice wake-up, power-button behavior, lock-screen access, stored Gemini activity, and the Gemini app itself.

For the strongest shutdown without deleting anything, set the default digital assistant to None. If you only dislike accidental launches, leave Gemini installed and turn off the trigger that bothers you.

Disabling Gemini On Android: The Settings That Matter

Gemini can be present in several places at once, so one switch rarely changes every behavior. Removing the default-assistant role is the broadest first move because it stops Android from treating Gemini as the phone’s primary assistant.

  1. Open Settings on your Android phone or tablet.
  2. Tap Apps, then Default apps, then Digital assistant app.
  3. Tap Default digital assistant app.
  4. Select None, or choose another assistant app if one is available.

After None is selected, the phone no longer has Gemini assigned as its default digital assistant. Google notes that menu names can vary by Android manufacturer, so searching Settings for Digital assistant app is the documented fallback when the path looks different.

If the screen shows Google as the default assistant, that label can represent either Gemini or Google Assistant. Choosing None is the direct choice when you do not want either one assigned as Android’s assistant.

What Does Disabling Gemini Actually Change?

Disabling Gemini can mean four different things: removing its assistant role, stopping its launch triggers, limiting stored activity, or deleting the app. Changing only one of those does not automatically change the others.

That distinction matters when Gemini seems to “come back.” Uninstalling the app does not automatically clear the default digital assistant assignment, and turning off activity does not stop the app from opening.

Stop Voice, Button, And Lock-Screen Triggers

Gemini can stay installed without being allowed to jump in from a wake phrase, hardware shortcut, or locked screen. These controls are useful when you still want to open Gemini manually but do not want accidental launches.

To stop voice wake-up, open the Gemini mobile app, tap Menu – the three-line button at the left – then your profile picture or initial, then Settings, then Talk to Gemini hands-free. Turn off Hey Google. Saying the wake phrase should no longer open Gemini.

To change the long-press behavior, open SettingsSystemGesturesPress & hold power button, then choose the action you prefer. On phones with different menus, search Settings for power, side button, or gesture. A long press should then perform the replacement action rather than calling the digital assistant.

For the lock screen, open Gemini and go to Menuprofile picture or initialSettingsGemini on lock screen. Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking. Gemini should then require access past the lock screen before you open it directly.

Which Control Matches The Problem

What You Want To Stop Setting To Change What Happens
Gemini as the phone assistant Default digital assistant appNone Android no longer assigns Gemini as the default assistant
Voice activation Talk to Gemini hands-free → turn off Hey Google The wake phrase stops opening Gemini
Power-button launch Press & hold power button A long press can perform another action
Lock-screen access Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking Gemini no longer opens through that lock-screen permission
Saved Gemini history Gemini Apps ActivityTurn off New activity stops appearing in normal Gemini activity history
Old Gemini history Delete → choose a time range Selected stored Gemini activity is removed
The Gemini app icon Uninstall the Gemini mobile app The separate app is removed; the assistant assignment needs its own change

Can You Switch Back To Google Assistant?

Google still documents a switch back to Google Assistant on devices where that option is offered. Google’s current Gemini management instructions also document the default-assistant, voice, button, lock-screen, and app-removal controls.

  1. Open the Gemini mobile app.
  2. Tap Menu at the left, then your profile picture or initial.
  3. Tap Switch to Google Assistant, then Google Assistant.
  4. In the confirmation dialog, tap Switch.

When the option is available and the switch completes, Google Assistant responds to the assistant gesture or wake phrase instead of Gemini. Existing Gemini activity is not deleted by changing assistants. If your device no longer offers Google Assistant, choose None or another listed assistant instead.

Turn Off Gemini Activity Without Removing The App

Gemini’s activity setting controls stored chat activity and several connected services, not whether the app can launch. Turn it off when your concern is account history rather than the assistant shortcut itself.

In the Gemini app, tap Menu → your profile picture or initialGemini Apps Activity. Near the top, tap On, then choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity. The activity control should then show that Keep Activity is off.

Google says conversations may still be retained with your account for up to 72 hours for service and feedback processing when Keep Activity is off. Under Google’s current documented behavior, Workspace, Google Home, Maps, Photos, Spotify, YouTube, YouTube Music, and several other connected services are unavailable in Gemini with Keep Activity off, while Utilities, Phone, Messages, and WhatsApp remain available.

Remove The Gemini App Without Leaving It As Assistant

Deleting the Gemini mobile app is not the same as removing Gemini from the assistant slot. Google explicitly warns that uninstalling the app does not automatically remove Gemini as the device’s default digital assistant.

Change Default digital assistant app first, then uninstall Gemini using your phone’s normal app-removal controls. If the phone does not offer an uninstall option, leaving the app in place while removing its default-assistant role, voice trigger, power-button trigger, and lock-screen access still stops the common automatic launch points.

Change You Make Automatic Launches Stopped Old Account Activity Deleted
Set assistant to None Default-assistant calls No
Turn off Hey Google Wake phrase only No
Change power-button action Power-button trigger only No
Turn off lock-screen use Locked-screen access only No
Turn off Keep Activity None by itself No, unless deletion is also selected
Uninstall Gemini Not necessarily; change the assistant role separately No

The Settings That Leave Gemini Out Of The Way

For the broadest shutdown available from Android settings, remove Gemini as the default assistant first, then turn off its remaining triggers and activity controls. That avoids the common mistake of deleting the app while leaving the assistant assignment untouched.

  1. Set Default digital assistant app to None.
  2. Turn off Hey Google under Talk to Gemini hands-free.
  3. Change Press & hold power button to a non-assistant action.
  4. Turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
  5. Turn off Gemini Apps Activity if you do not want normal Gemini activity history stored.
  6. Delete existing Gemini activity if you want prior history removed.
  7. Uninstall the Gemini mobile app if your device allows it and you no longer want the separate app.

After those changes, Gemini should no longer be assigned as your Android assistant or wake from the usual voice and button shortcuts. If you also removed the app, its separate launcher icon should be gone as well.
