Android parental controls can be removed with the device PIN; Family Link supervision needs the supervising parent’s approval.
Android now has more than one parental-control system, so how to disable parental controls on Android depends on what created the restriction: Android device controls, Google Family Link, or an older Google Play content-restriction PIN. Removing the wrong control can leave screen-time, app, or store limits active even when another menu says they are off.
For a phone you own or manage, identify the control first, then use the matching removal method below. Android 17 added device-level parental controls, while Family Link remains the account-level option for supervised children and teens.
Which Parental Control System Is Active?
The menu that created the restriction determines where it must be removed. Android device controls use a local PIN, while Family Link ties supervision to a child’s Google Account and requires the supervising parent’s authorization.
- Settings > Parental controls with a PIN usually means Android 17 device-level controls.
- Family Link, child profiles, remote screen-time changes, or location controls point to Google Family Link.
- Google Play rating limits may come from an older Play content-restriction PIN or from the newer Android parental-controls PIN.
Do not factory-reset the phone just because one app is blocked. A reset is only relevant in a narrow forgotten-PIN case, and it can erase local data.
Disable Android Parental Controls With The Device PIN
Android 17 device-level controls are turned off by deleting the parental-controls PIN. Google says deleting that PIN disables all on-device controls, including Google Play content filters that use the same PIN.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Parental controls.
- Tap Manage parental controls PIN.
- Choose Delete PIN.
- Enter the current PIN and confirm the deletion.
If the phone has multiple users, turn off on-device controls for each user before deleting the PIN. Once the PIN is deleted, the device-level limits disappear from the active controls.
If you forgot the PIN and added a recovery account earlier, use Forgot PIN under Manage parental controls PIN and verify the recovery account. Without a configured recovery account, Google’s current instructions say a factory reset is required to recover from a forgotten Android parental-controls PIN.
What Each Android Control Actually Affects
Turning off one restriction does not always remove the others. The table shows where each common control applies and what must be disabled to remove it.

Stop Family Link Supervision From A Parent’s Device
Family Link supervision should be stopped from the supervising parent’s account when the goal is to remove account-level parental controls. Google allows supervision to be stopped once the child reaches age 13, or the applicable age in the child’s country; users under 18 still need parent approval.
- Open the Family Link app on the parent’s device.
- Select the child’s profile at the top left.
- Tap Controls > Account Settings > About supervision.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
- Tap Stop supervision.
Google notifies both the parent and child when supervision stops. The child’s Google Account remains in place, but the Family Link restrictions tied to supervision are removed.

Can You Stop Family Link From The Child’s Phone?
Family Link can be stopped from the child’s Android phone on supported accounts, but a child under 18 needs parent approval. Google says the child-device path requires Android 7.0 or later.
- Open Settings on the child’s phone.
- On Android 8.1 or later, tap Digital Wellbeing & parental controls. On other supported versions, tap Google > All services > Parental controls.
- Tap the More menu in the top-right corner, then tap Stop supervision.
- Verify the parent by signing in or entering the Parent Access Code.
- Follow the remaining on-screen instructions to turn supervision off.
When the process finishes, Family Link supervision is no longer active for that Google Account. If the option is unavailable, use the parent’s Family Link app and confirm that the account is old enough for supervision to be stopped.
Turn Off Google Play Content Restrictions
Google Play content restrictions now share the Android parental-controls PIN for new setups, while existing Play-specific PINs can continue to work until they are deleted. Family Link-managed Google Play restrictions remain controlled through the parent’s Family Link account.
For newer Android device controls, use Settings > Parental controls > Manage parental controls PIN > Delete PIN. Google states that deleting the Android parental-controls PIN turns off Play content restrictions that use it.
If you still have an older Play-specific PIN and forgot it, Google’s documented reset is Settings > Apps & notifications > Google Play Store > Storage > Clear data or Clear storage. That resets the Play content restrictions and the old PIN; it does not remove Family Link supervision.
When Controls Refuse To Turn Off
A parental-control switch that returns or a blocked app that stays blocked usually means another control layer is still active. Match the symptom to the source before changing more settings.

Match The Restriction Before You Change Anything
The fastest finish comes from removing the control that actually owns the restriction. Use these three paths in sequence only when each one applies to the phone.
- Android 17 device controls: delete the parental-controls PIN in Settings.
- Family Link: stop supervision from the parent’s Family Link app, or use the child-device path with parent approval.
- Google Play only: remove the current Android parental-controls PIN, or reset an older forgotten Play PIN through Google Play Store app data.
After the matching control is off, reopen the app, store page, or setting that was restricted. If the limit is still present, another layer in the table above is active and needs to be changed from its own control menu.
