On Android, set the default digital assistant to None or switch to Google Assistant; on iPhone, delete the Gemini app.
The part people miss when learning how to turn Gemini off on phone is Android’s default digital-assistant setting. Removing the Gemini app alone may not stop a long press of the power button, a voice trigger, or another assistant shortcut from calling Google’s assistant layer.
The fix depends on what you want gone. You can remove Gemini as the phone’s assistant, keep the app but stop voice and lock-screen launches, switch back to Google Assistant, or uninstall Gemini. On iPhone, Gemini is a standalone app, so removal is much simpler.
Do You Want Gemini Gone Or Just Quiet?
Gemini can be disconnected from Android’s assistant controls without deleting the app. That is the better fit when you still want to open Gemini manually but do not want it appearing from the power button, voice activation, or the lock screen.
- Stop all assistant shortcuts: set the default digital assistant to None.
- Keep a Google voice assistant: switch from Gemini to Google Assistant.
- Stop voice activation only: turn off Hey Google.
- Stop locked-phone access: turn off Use Gemini without unlocking.
- Remove the app: uninstall Gemini after changing the assistant setting if you do not want the app at all.
Turning Gemini Off On Android: Assistant, Voice, Or App
Android gives you several separate controls because the Gemini app, the default digital assistant, and the hardware shortcut are not the same setting. Google says deleting the app does not automatically remove Gemini as the device’s default digital assistant.
Remove Gemini As The Default Assistant
Removing the default assistant stops Android from assigning Gemini to system assistant triggers. On most current Android phones, use the documented path below.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps > Default apps > Digital assistant app.
- Tap Default digital assistant app.
- Select None, or choose another assistant app if one is installed.
If your phone uses different labels, search inside Settings for digital assistant app. Once None is selected, the phone no longer has Gemini assigned as its default digital assistant.
Switch Back To Google Assistant
Google Assistant is still offered as a fallback in Google’s current Gemini settings. Open the Gemini mobile app, tap the Menu button on the left, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Switch to Google Assistant > Google Assistant > Switch.
After the switch, supported Hey Google requests and assistant touch shortcuts respond through Google Assistant instead of Gemini. If Switch to Google Assistant is unavailable on your phone, use Default digital assistant app > None instead; Gemini activity already stored in your Google Account is not deleted by either change.
| What You Want | Setting To Change | What Happens |
|---|---|---|
| Stop assistant gestures | Default digital assistant app > None | Android no longer assigns an assistant to the system shortcut. |
| Use Google Assistant instead | Gemini > Menu > profile picture or initial > Switch to Google Assistant | Google Assistant answers supported voice and touch assistant triggers. |
| Stop “Hey Google” | Gemini > Menu > profile picture or initial > Settings > Talk to Gemini hands-free | Voice activation is turned off. |
| Block lock-screen use | Gemini > Menu > profile picture or initial > Settings > Gemini on lock screen | Gemini requires the phone to be unlocked before use. |
| Stop power-button launches | Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button | The long press can be assigned to another action. |
| Remove the Android app | Google Play > profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Gemini > Uninstall | The installed Gemini app is removed. |
| Remove the iPhone app | Hold Gemini > Remove App > Delete App | The Gemini app is deleted from the iPhone. |
Google’s Gemini app management instructions confirm the separate controls for the default assistant, voice activation, lock-screen access, the power button, and app removal. Those controls are separate, so changing one does not automatically change the others.
Stop Voice, Lock-Screen, Or Power-Button Launches
Gemini can stay installed while its common triggers are disabled one at a time. In the Gemini app, open Menu > your profile picture or initial > Settings > Talk to Gemini hands-free, then turn off Hey Google. The switch shows off, and the wake phrase no longer opens Gemini.
For lock-screen access, use Menu > your profile picture or initial > Settings > Gemini on lock screen, then turn off Use Gemini without unlocking. Gemini should now stay closed when a locked phone hears the wake phrase. For the power button, Google documents Settings > System > Gestures > Press & hold power button; phone makers can name or place that control differently, so search Settings for power, side button, or gesture if needed. After you assign another press-and-hold action, holding the button performs that action instead of opening Gemini.
If Gemini was installed through Google Play, Google documents Google Play > your profile icon > Manage apps & devices > Manage > Gemini > Uninstall. If Uninstall is not offered, leave the app installed and remove Gemini from the default-assistant slot; Android Help notes that some preinstalled apps cannot be deleted and may depend on the phone maker for a disable option. A completed uninstall removes Gemini from Google Play’s installed-app list.
Turn Gemini Off On iPhone Without Leaving The App Behind
Gemini on iPhone can be removed like any other downloaded app. Apple Support’s current deletion sequence is to touch and hold the app, tap Remove App, tap Delete App, then confirm Delete.
- Touch and hold the Gemini icon on the Home Screen.
- Tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App.
- Tap Delete to confirm.
The Gemini icon disappears and the app is removed from the iPhone. Removing it from the Home Screen without choosing Delete App only moves it out of sight while leaving it in App Library. If Delete App is missing, Apple says to check Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps.
Does Removing Gemini Delete Your Activity?
Removing Gemini from a phone does not erase Gemini Apps Activity already stored in your Google Account. Google lets personal-account users turn off Keep Activity or choose Turn off and delete activity separately.
| Change | Stops Gemini From Launching | Deletes Saved Gemini Activity |
|---|---|---|
| Set assistant to None | Yes, for system assistant triggers | No |
| Switch to Google Assistant | Yes, for supported assistant triggers | No |
| Turn off Hey Google | Yes, for voice wake-up | No |
| Turn off lock-screen access | Yes, while the phone is locked | No |
| Uninstall the Gemini app | Removes direct app access | No |
| Turn off and delete activity | No | Deletes the Gemini Apps Activity you choose to remove |
In the Gemini app, open Menu > your profile picture or initial > Gemini Apps Activity. Near the top, tap On, then choose Turn off or Turn off and delete activity. The activity control then shows that Keep Activity is off. Google says conversations can still be retained with the account for up to 72 hours when Keep Activity is off so the service can operate and process feedback.
Make Your Phone Stop Launching Gemini
Android needs more than one change only when Gemini has several ways to activate; iPhone needs app deletion if your goal is simply to remove Gemini from the device. Use the smallest set of changes that matches what has been bothering you.
- On Android, set Default digital assistant app to None if you want no system assistant.
- If you want Google Assistant instead, use Gemini’s Switch to Google Assistant control rather than selecting None.
- Turn off Hey Google and Use Gemini without unlocking if voice or lock-screen launches are the problem.
- Reassign the power-button long press if that shortcut keeps opening an assistant.
- Uninstall Gemini from Google Play if you also want the Android app removed; on iPhone, use Remove App > Delete App.
- If privacy is part of the reason, manage Gemini Apps Activity separately because uninstalling the app does not erase stored account activity.
