A Wi-Fi Direct connection does not automatically give you a file browser, print button, or casting screen. For anyone figuring out how to use WiFi Direct, the job is two-part: create the wireless link, then use the feature that handles the task.
Wi-Fi Direct does not need an internet connection or home router. Phones, PCs, printers, cameras, and displays expose it in different places, so the control depends on the task.
What Does Wi-Fi Direct Actually Do?
Wi-Fi Direct creates a local peer-to-peer Wi-Fi connection between compatible devices, so traffic can move without your router. One device manages the temporary group while the devices communicate over Wi-Fi.
Google’s current Android documentation says Wi-Fi Direct can connect nearby devices without a network or hotspot and supports WPA2 protection. The link is only the transport: printing, casting, and file transfer still need a feature or app that handles the task.
Pair Two Devices Before You Start The Task
A Wi-Fi Direct session begins with the receiver becoming discoverable and the other device selecting it. Menu names vary by product, so use the device’s Wi-Fi Direct screen or normal Wi-Fi list.
- On the receiving device, turn on its Wi-Fi Direct or direct wireless mode. Printers and cameras often show a network name and password on their display or information page.
- On the sending device, open its Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, device-pairing, or task-specific connection screen.
- Select the exact device name. A printer network commonly begins with
DIRECT-; other accessories use the model or device name. - Approve the request or enter the password shown by the receiving device, then open the app or feature for the job.
The link is ready when both devices report an active connection. Pairing by itself does not move a file or start a print job.
Using Wi-Fi Direct On Android And Pixel Phones

Send Files On Android Without Manual Pairing
Current Android file sharing normally uses Quick Share instead of manual Wi-Fi Direct pairing. Google lists Quick Share for Android 6 and later; if it is unavailable, use the receiving device’s own app or a cable.

Connect Windows To Displays And Printers
Windows uses task-specific controls instead of one general Wi-Fi Direct transfer screen. Miracast handles compatible displays, while printer setup finds Wi-Fi Direct printers.
Cast A Windows 11 Screen
Microsoft’s current Windows 11 steps use the Cast panel for a Miracast display. The receiving TV, projector, or adapter must support Miracast.
- Turn on the TV, projector, or Miracast adapter.
- On the PC, press
Windows + K. - Select the display from the available-device list and follow any on-screen request.
The connection is working when the Windows desktop appears on the selected display. If Windows + K reports that Miracast is unsupported, use a compatible adapter or a wired display connection.
Print To An HP Wi-Fi Direct Printer
HP’s current support flow lets Windows connect to a compatible Wi-Fi Direct printer without a router. HP says most printers it released after 2014 provide this option; if a model does not, use its normal Wi-Fi or USB setup.
- Find the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct name and password from its display, information page, or HP printer settings.
- In Windows, search for and open Printers & scanners.
- Select Add a printer or scanner, then Show Wi-Fi Direct printers.
- Choose the printer whose name begins with
DIRECT-, select Add device, and enter the WPS PIN if Windows requests it. - Open the document or photo, choose Print, and select that printer.
The printer is ready when it remains in the Windows printer list and accepts the job. HP notes that a displayed WPS PIN may expire, so repeat the add-printer process if Windows rejects an old PIN.
A Wi-Fi Direct link does not provide internet by itself. If joining a printer, camera, or accessory takes your device offline, finish the local task and reconnect to your normal Wi-Fi network.
